The Ancient Art of Gyotaku
In 19th-century Japan, fishermen needed proof of their catches. They developed Gyotaku — literally "fish rubbing" — to create detailed records of size and species that couldn't be disputed.
What began as practical documentation evolved into a revered art form. The technique spread to Hawaii, where local fishermen adopted it to preserve memories of their most prized catches.
Today, you'll learn these authentic methods using locally sourced fish, traditional rice paper, and natural inks. Each print captures not just the fish's form, but its essence — scales, fins, and even the curve of its body frozen in time.
